FDCP NATIONAL FILM ARCHIVE
04 August 2009

FDCP Chairman Rolando S. Atienza has announced the establishment of the National Film Archives of the Philippines (NFAP).
Under the Republic Act No. 9167 Section 3.10, the Film Development Council is tasked to “ensure the establishment of a film archive in order to conserve and protect film negatives and/or prints as part of the nation’s historical, cultural and artistic heritage.”
The NFAP aims to preserve and restore the country’s most treasured films and cinematic masterpieces.  These films represent the cultural heritage of our society through the eyes of the artist.  Moreover, the Film Archive will also promote and encourage the availability of these films to educational institutions and other entities that will further develop the Filipino social, cultural and artistic values.

The National Film Archive’s first project involves the digitization and restoration of 50 films chosen by a Selection Committee chaired by Nestor J. Jardin.  There is an urgent need ro preserbe our films which form a part of the country’s national treasure.  Each day that passes is a lost opportunity for this worthy project and the FDCP is hopeful for the cooperation and participation of other filmmakers in making sure that this project is a success.

Actors:    Bea Alonzo, Sam Milby, Derek Ramsay
Production:    ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc.
Synopsis:    When Lara lost her husband of 5 months, she didn’t think she could go on living, much less love again. Seven months later, Lara is still mourning. Every time a loved one died, someone else was there to cushion the blow. But when Oliver died, no one could offer any consolation. Not only was Oliver the love of her life, he had also become her life. It would have been better if she had died with him. In the meantime, her pre-school has taken a nosedive. On top of this she’s deep in debt with her unpaid condo and car mortgages. With a heavy heart, Lara rents out her condo. This is how she meets Chris, an Amboy who apparently just lost his wife too. He becomes her tenant. They would change each other’s lives. Like Lara, Chris is also mourning. He has been living his life aimlessly. She had been married a little longer – about 2 years – before losing his wife. Unlike Oliver though, she is very much alive, only, in the arms of the man who owned her heart in the first place. Lara and Chris bond as they deal with their respective losses. He teaches her to trust herself to be independent; she teaches him to entrust his heart to someone again. They find solace in each other and fall in love, but no sooner do their past hurts and thwarted hopes threaten their blossoming relationship and cast a double in their minds about each other.

FDCP HOSTS FRENCH GUESTS
03 August 2009

The FDCP is honored to have hosted three VIP French guests in Manila last July.

Aude Hesbert, Festival Director of Paris Cinema and Jeremy Segay, Festival Consultant and Program Adviser of Paris Cinema and Festival Programmer for the Cannes Film Festival came to Manila to attend CINEMALAYA CINCO Philippine Independent Film Festival 2009.

The FDCP invited the two Paris Cinema officials to thank them for having picked the Philippines as the Country of Honor in last year’s highly successful Paris Cinema when forty-two Filipino films were showcased.  Ms. Hesbert was also a member of the Jury for CINEMALAYA Feature Film Competition.

The French Embassy in Manila and the FDCP hosted Alan Bégramian in Manila.  Mr. Bégramian is the Counselor for European and International Affairs of the Central National de la Cinematographie (CNC).  Mr. Bégramian already briefed FDCP Chairman Rolando S. Atienza and PFESO Executive Director Digna H. Santiago in Paris last year during the 6th Paris Cinema about the mandate of CNC, the equivalent of FDCP in France.

Mr. Bégramian held a talk on July 23 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the venue for CINEMALAYA CINCO.  Filmmakers and Filipino policy-makers attended the very informative sharing from the French official.  Some of the most interesting information from his talk are: that CNC is in charge of formulating policies that will help the French movie industry; that CNC’s 2008 Support Fund amounted to Eu 528 Million; that there are various support programs including Fond Sud Cinéma. Most of the questions of the audience zeroed in on the Grant window and Director Raya Martin shared how his Independencia was able to be given a Fond Sud Cinéma endowment.

The French Ambassador, Thierry Borja de Mozota tendered a lunch for Hesbert, Segay and Bégramian.  FDCP Chairman Atienza, Cinemalaya Foundation President and CCP President Nestor Jardin and Cinemalaya Foundation Chairman Antonio O. Cojuangco were among the invited guests of the Ambassador.  Lily Monteverde, Executive Producer of Regal Entertainment, Inc. also hosted a dinner for the French visitors.
